About Jennifer Thompson, RN, BSN, CCRN
Jennifer is a registered nurse with twelve years of practice experience. She graduated from Marymount University in 1996 and took on a role as an office nurse in a large cardiovascular practice. From there, she went on to work at Prince William Hospital in an oncology and telemetry acute care/medi-surg setting. From there she began work at INOVA Fairfax Hospital in 1998 where she has been ever since. She has worked in the cardiovascular surgery setting since joining INOVA, but has also worked all other intensive care areas in the hospital to include acute coronary care, trauma and neurological intensive care. She specializes in cardiovascular intensive care nursing, to include all types of cardiothoracic surgical patients, heart and lung transplant patients, and patients requiring artificial implantable heart devices. She is currently working in the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU), a 24-bed ICU in a level I trauma center. She is employed there as a staff nurse, as well as in the role of Charge Nurse. Four beds in this ICU are dedicated to the role of post-anesthesia care (PACU). This complex and highly critical environment lends itself to the care of a wide variety of patients. There are teenagers who come to this unit after receiving lung transplants, elderly patients from nursing homes requiring intensive care, and every other type of patient in between. The patient population of this unit spans a broad scope of medical problems in addition to cardiovascular surgery, to include heart failure, pneumonia, diabetes, renal failure requiring dialysis, ventilator dependency, stroke, infection, and end of life care.
Jennifer has also recently begun teaching at a local community college to Associate Degree nursing students. She works as a clinical instructor in the nursing home and hospital unit setting.
Jennifer is certified in both Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS). She is a board certified critical care nurse, maintaining the Certified Critical Care Nurse title (CCRN). She is also a member of the American Association of Critical Care Nurses as well as the American Association of Legal Nurse Consultants. Jennifer is licensed to practice in the state of Virginia, which carries reciprocity with Maryland and Washington D.C.
About Jennifer Martinez, RN, BSN
Jennifer is a registered nurse with eleven years of clinical experience. She graduated from George Mason University with a Bachelors Degree in Nursing. She began her career at Sibley Hospital where she worked on a medical-surgical unit, moved on to the cardiac care unit & then to the medical-surgical intensive care unit. After relocating to New York, she worked at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in the cardio-thoracic intensive care unit. She then worked for a large cosmetic dermatology practice and learned the skills associated with laser surgery, MOHS surgery & multiple other cosmetic procedures. Upon moving back to the Washington D.C. area, she began working at INOVA Fairfax Hospital in the cardiovascular intensive care unit where she is currently employed. In the past she has occasionally functioned as charge nurse for the unit, and has been on the leadership committee, elected by her fellow peers. She currently fills the positions of a staff nurse. In this 24 bed ICU, she cares for a variety of patients She is skilled in the care of a wide array of cardio-vascular patients, including but not limited to, cardiac surgery, lung and heart transplants, artificial heart devices, ventilator dependency, and renal failure requiring dialysis.
Jennifer has also recently begun practicing in the area of Interventional Radiology at Georgetown University Hospital. Here she is caring for a range of patients including outpatients undergoing minor procedures to patients in the intensive care until requiring life- saving procedures. She provides these patients with moderate sedation during their procedures, while insuring their airway is maintained and their vital signs are stable. For those that are outpatients, she recovers them from sedation & discharges them from the hospital after providing post-procedure teaching.
Jennifer is licensed as a registered nurse in Virginia, Washington D.C. & New York. She is certified in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS). She is an also active member in the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN) and the American Association of Legal Nurse Consultants (AALNC).
